Garden State
Netflixed Garden State and watched it tonight after numerous recommendations. Well, I would’t call it great but I definetly liked it. The story is about depressed 26 year old, Andrew, played by Zach Braff, who returns home for his mothers funeral. It’s the first time he has been home in 9 years and as a result is estranged from his father, a pyschologist who has had him on lithium since he was 10. Anyway, while home he decides to stop taking his medication and in the meantime catches up with some friends and begins to feel something besides hollowness for the first time in years. He also meets a girl named Sam, played by Natalie Portman, who might have been the best part of the movie. The character she plays is so strange and neurotic that it’s oddly appealling. (I think I stole that description from my brother.) Well they begin to form a relationship and realize they are very a like if at the sametime different, but it helps them both. The movie is a bit strange because it’s a sort of drama built around a comedy because there are several funny scenes. A good netflix if you ask me. 7/10.
